ABOUT TUNE YOUR MIND [by RIOPY]

For composer-pianist RIOPY, music isn’t simply an artform; it’s a lifeline. It was the key to both escaping and recovering from a difficult childhood and coming into his own sense of self and equanimity. He is an embodiment of one of the common definitions for the word “heal”: to make “sound.” With nearly 1 billion streams, a #1 Billboard chart album, and a RIAA-certified gold track, he now turns to his personal passion for sound meditation with the neuroscience-backed wellness project, TUNE YOUR MIND [by RIOPY].

“Even the best instruments need to be tuned,” says RIOPY. “I see the body as an instrument: We are the original embodiment of music. With this program, my hope is that people can take a moment to ‘tune’ themselves; to bring their mind and body into closer harmony, and in this way move themselves a bit closer to feeling calm and at peace.”

The need is higher than ever, with the world at an all-time high for stress and unhappiness. “It’s tough for a lot of people at the moment,” says RIOPY. “We all know it; we feel it.” Meditation, whose benefits have been studied and documented for decades, is emerging as a key solution to our global stress epidemic. However, as simple as the concept is, many curious, would-be practitioners are met with several barriers to getting started, including not knowing where to begin. It can also feel hard to feel like you’re doing it “right” amid countless fake gurus and influencers projecting impossible images of effortless enlightenment.

TUNE YOUR MIND [by RIOPY] cuts through all of this noise, providing a series of original sound meditations that are delivered without dogma and backed by neuroscience. This initiative reflects RIOPY’s recent work with binaural beats therapy, an emerging area of sound therapy that works with the fact that our left and right ears each receive a slightly different frequency, which our brain then processes as a single tone. Listening to music pitched at different frequencies to heighten this binaural effect can help the brain reach the theta state — the same state that is activated during deep meditation.RIOPY has worked with binaural beats, as well as an encephalogram (a machine that has been specifically used to study music’s effect on our minds by measuring electrical activity in the brain), to craft Meditation 66.

Part-album, part-meditation challenge, Meditation 66 is a 21-day series of two-to-three minute practices that serve as functional soundscapes for meditation, combining RIOPY’s signature minimalist style with scientifically-proven tools for bringing the mind and body into closer harmony. By “tuning in” each day, listeners can slowly yet sustainably build the muscle to sustain a long-term meditation practice, culminating after three weeks with two long-form meditations; the 22-minute “Flow State 22” and 66-minute “Meditation 66 (Full Experience)”, respectively 22 and 66 minutes long.

In addition to being rooted in peer-reviewed study, these are also the same personal audio tools that RIOPY has used in his own daily meditation which, along with music, was a key tool in his own personal healing journey. Growing up in a cult in rural France where music was banned, it was a chance encounter with a piano that gave him both an outlet and a sanctuary from childhood trauma. His time at the piano is often a time where he can channel his emotions and gain a sense of self. Since then, RIOPY has been an advocate for music’s use in helping others to do the same. Much like John Cage and Philip Glass before him, he has both turned his music into a meditative practice and found the musical qualities inherent in meditation.

His work has enabled millions of listeners to access their own senses of self and wellbeing and has been featured on meditation channels across all major digital streaming platforms, as well as Peloton’s guided meditation classes. He has also partnered with the Mental Health Foundation to compose a piece for Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, “Meditation 111”, — a piece intended to help people soothe anxiety that is simple enough for anyone to learn, regardless of musical ability.
